Write to your MPs, find out who supports England.

Dear MPs

You have a choice, you can play your part in saving the UK or you can continue to pretend that the ‘status quo’ will prevail.

Please allow English sporting fans the chance to sing their National anthem before England plays.

By giving England a voice you will also be giving Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish sporting fans the chance to sing ‘God save the Queen’.

Thank You

England in my Heart

  1. Hi 219

I’ve signed a couple of petitions including Toby’s Government one. I’ve also written to my MP Anne Milton who’s Deputy Chief Whip. I’d say that as this is cross-party and fits into English Votes for English laws, it should be possible to get Conservative support. Do we know what the SNP think about it?

  2. O Flower of Scotland,
    When will we see
    Your like again,
    That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
    And stood against him,
    Proud Edward’s Army,
    And sent him homeward,
    To think again

You should ready that last line.

  4. We used to have the dirge to Betty forced on us which is why it is still booed to this day. Here is a clip from the 1968 match between Wales and France at the Arms Park. You can just about hear Betty’s dirge despite the best efforts of the crowd to drown it out with boos before a rousing rendition of our real anthem.

I really hope your idea goes ahead because it will be so funny to hear Betty’s dirge being booed at every game.

  5. I think Toby completely misunderstands the current situation. England has it’s own national anthem, it called God Save the Queen. It’s England that has chosen to force that upon the other three nations(outwith the Ulster Loyalist community be they in N.I or West Scotland)). In effect what Toby is proposing is for England to have two national anthems, one for itself(Jerusalem?) and still forcing GSTQ upon the rest of us. It’s actually almost comical if you think the Ireland supporters at RBS 6N are going to sing GSTQ, have you not been paying attention to events of the past century in Ireland? In the real world what is the chances of getting them to merrily sing GSTQ. Nope, even this solution will still result in GSTQ being booed at every opportunity by the S, W and I

If Toby took his (Englands) rose-tinted spectacles off for a second he would realise the far, indeed the ONLY, realistic option is for GSTQ(or Jerusalem/whatever) to be sung solely by England and for a shiny new UK anthem to be commissioned. Folk in S, W and I will NEVER sing GSTQ, at least this solution might stop it being booed by them.

It is the song itself that is the problem Toby, not who is singing it. Your solution would still have GSTQ being forced upon the rest of us and it WILL continue to be booed at 6N ties and will have the exact opposite effect than your wish for a ‘loyal* uniting anthem’

*Even putting the word “loyal” in alone shows how much Toby has completely no idea of what is going on culturally and politically in Scotland and N.Ireland

  6. You want to check your facts. Danny Boy is NOT sung as a national anthem at sporting events. Ireland’s Call is used when teams representing the whole of Ireland are playing. The National Anthem of whichever part of the island may also be sung so Ireland sings two songs before rugby internationals in Dublin; Ireland’s Call and The Soldier’s Song.
As for playing God Save The Queen at Scottish Internationals in Scotland when England are NOT playing…well…good luck with that. I doubt it would be heard.

  7. Jerusalem, fine song that it is, may not be your best choice of an anthem for England. The lyrics and imagery are specifically Christian of a particulary old-fashioned and peculiarly mystic kind. God Save The Queen – actually written as an English/ Hanoverian anthem – is less specific and more acceptable to people of other faiths.
Neither is, of course, acceptable to the 40% or so who have NO religion.
